Sundance Institute Film Series - We Live in Public
December 2, 2009 Times: 7pm Location: Park City Library Admission: Free sundance.org Director Ondi Timoner made Sundance history this year when she became the first director to win two Grand Jury Prizes; one for We Live in Public and one for Dig! in 2004. In this film, Timoner offers a fascinating ten-year chronicle of internet pioneer Josh Harris as he launched an art experiment involving more than 100 artists living in a New York City bunker under 24-hour surveillance. Timoner couples Harris’s footage from his exhibitions with rousing vérité of her own for a sexy, yet cautionary tale where we all become Big Brother. Join director Ondi Timoner for a discussion after the film and come early to meet Festival staffers and get the inside scoop on how to make the most of your 2010 Festival experience. |

Herb & Dorothy, The Movie: You Don't Have to be a Rockefeller to Collect Art
December 3, 2009 Times: 6pm Location: Jim Santy Auditorium, 1255 Park Avenue Phone: 435-649-3001 Admission: $7 adults, $5 students/seniors Gallery MAR sponsors a viewing of Herb & Dorothy, a new film which tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb's salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy's paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Movie ticket sales wil benefit Arts Kids, Park City, an after-school group that empowers youth through the expressive arts and connects students through creativity. Recommended for art lovers, aged 10 and up. |

From Middle America to the halls of power in Washington to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan, the film explores with both humor and outrage a taboo question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Years ago, that love seemed so innocent. Today, however, the American dream leaves many citizens out as families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore focuses on ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down, and goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds may shock and motivate you. |

New Year's Eve: An Evening with the Wainwrights
December 31, 2009 Times: 8pm Location: The Eccles Center Phone: 435-655-3114 ecclescenter.org Only on a blue moon (yes a real blue moon) could a family of musical geniuses come together on the Eccles Stage to ring in the New Year. It will be an extravagant affair as the Wainwrights usher in 2010 with spectacular, musical flourish. The patriarch, Loudon Wainwright III (known as the “New Dylan since his 1970 debut) masterfully blends folk, country, and rock with storytelling and humor. His dazzling showman-of-a son, Rufus Wainwright, has been affectionately referred to by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” and praised by The New York Times for his "genuine originality." Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. And last but certainly not least, the sweet-voiced daughter, Lucy Wainwright Roche, adds her own, endearingly simple, folk-meets-pop style to the mix with a sound NPR describes as “sincere and raw, at times, recalling Joni Mitchell and Patti Griffin.” Bid 2009 farewell, and come celebrate 2010 with the exceptional music of these phenomenal singer-songwriters. Happy New Year! |
